It’s that time of year again, if you haven’t done so already make sure to take advantage of your right to a free credit report from the three credit bureaus.

In the past we have posted the phone numbers for each agency and you have to would call each one to get your free report if you lived in certain states. It is now free in all states once per calendar year.

Credit Report:

They have finally made a standardized website that allows you to get all three reports online. It asks for your basic info once and then takes you to each of the three sites one by one.

Wireless Bridging.. Remove that cable running through the house

I had this long 30' ethernet cable connecting my remote hub in the home office with my Cable Modem and Wireless Router downstairs. For years I considered drilling holes through walls and ceilings but never got around to it. Recently someone told me about a Wireless Bridge.

The only reason I am posting this is because I found a really great deal for a wireless-G Bridge for only $20 at compusa. Its a Viewsonic WAPBR-100 which lists for $60-$80. The sale ends June 30, 2005, after which the price probably goes back to $60..

Trillian 3.1 Crashing on launch

So Trillian has not worked for me on windows for the past month or so since I installed that 3.1 update. It basically crashed on launch and full reinstalls had no effect. I think I chose not to install the MSN client update and thats what broke it. After much searching I found that all that needs to be done is a manual plugin update.. Notes below from a thread on Cerulean's forums:

-------
Replace the same named file(s) in C:/ProgramFiles/Trillian/plugins while Trillian is NOT running:

AIM patch (for 3.1 only): http://obscurity.ceruleanstudios.com/~gts/aim.dll
MSN patch (for 3.1 only): http://obscurity.ceruleanstudios.com/~gts/msn.dll

Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta

My buddy Wally (ironically, a mac os user) recommended Microsoft's new anti-spyware application as a way to get rid of the HomeSearchAssistant browser hijack. It's in beta but runs just fine. The scan was much faster than Ad-Aware or SBS&D. If anyone could get rid of a hijack in IE, it would have to be microsoft as they are the only ones with the source, so I gave it a try...

IE Browser hijacks causing exodus to Firefox?

I was a die-hard microsoft IE user for a very long time, but over the holidays my laptop became victim to adware, spyware and a browser hijacks. Once you get one it will multiply if you dont take care of it immediately. Malware these days is a lot more "effective" than it was just 6 months ago.. In the past, if you caught any non-virus bug, you'd run Ad-Aware or Spybot S&D and you'd be clean in a jiffy. No such luck these days.. in fact, an entire industry has spawned to deal with the epidemic.
