I was a die-hard microsoft IE user for a very long time, but over the holidays my laptop became victim to adware, spyware and a browser hijacks. Once you get one it will multiply if you dont take care of it immediately. Malware these days is a lot more "effective" than it was just 6 months ago.. In the past, if you caught any non-virus bug, you'd run Ad-Aware or Spybot S&D and you'd be clean in a jiffy. No such luck these days.. in fact, an entire industry has spawned to deal with the epidemic.
|
The most insidious bug on my system is the Home Search Assistant
None of the the three tools above had any effect on this hijack. Several sites have posted an insanely dangerous Mozilla's FireFox browser released recently and it's a great alternative to IE. This will allow me to postpone the reinstall to a better date. It mirrors most IE functions well and is quite fast on load. As long as IE is not opened, my system remains pretty clean. Too bad I cant delete IE.
The whole point of this post was not to whine about malware, but rather to point out an interesting trend in browser use. Note the double-digit shift over the past 12 months (since Jan 2004):
MS IE has lost considerable market share to Mozilla/Firefox: -14%
Firefox/Mozilla have gained even more : +15%
Im sure there are many browser tracking sites, w3schools Browser Statistics was near the top of google and has basic historical market share stats.

According to that link, IE (5 and 6) is now down to 70%. I can't remember it being this low since only shortly after it came out.
Good riddance. I don't want my browser to be able to interface with every facet of my Operating System - and it didn't even have tabbed browsing.
Firefox is stupendous. Opera still affords the user more control, though.
