My buddy Wally (ironically, a mac os user) recommended Microsoft's new anti-spyware application as a way to get rid of the HomeSearchAssistant browser hijack. It's in beta but runs just fine. The scan was much faster than Ad-Aware or SBS&D. If anyone could get rid of a hijack in IE, it would have to be microsoft as they are the only ones with the source, so I gave it a try...
Installation was a snap, it also installs a runtime spyware agent. It looked promising. After my initial run, 20 threats were found (RealVNC was one of them for some reason) and the app did a great job cleaning the system quickly.
After cleansing I ran IE and to my surprise, HomeSearchAssistant was gone! But of course within 15 seconds adware started popping up and BAM! the HSA reinstalled itself and was running as if nothing had ever happened.
Too bad for MS, looks like I am sticking with FireFox. Every day Microsoft lets this Hijack continue is one more day people are getting more comfortable with a different browser.
